How is your poor sleep affecting you?
Poor sleep presents in a range of ways.
Are you having trouble getting to sleep, staying asleep and/or waking early?
Do you find you are always tired - sleeping longer than usual?
Is your sleep disrupted?
Are you sleeping but not feeling rested?
Are you or your partner noticing that you are snoring and/or stopping breathing during the night?
Do you find you are moving around a lot at night, legs restless?
Are you finding you are excessively feeling sleeping during the day?
Answering yes to any of the above can be an indication of insomnia, hypersomnia, middle insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnoea. It can be the result of physical, health issues, depression, anxiety and difficult life circumstances.
There are a number of ways of assessing sleep. One of these which doctors use regularly is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale developed by Dr Murray Johns (1991) to measure daytime sleepiness as a reflection of sleep problems.
